The result is the kind of deep strength and balance that has earned Pilates its staying power and reputation for nearly a century.
Joseph Pilates created his namesake method (originally dubbed Contrology) with the goal of conditioning both body and mind holistically for maximum efficiency to acquire complete control over one’s body.
The Pilates method can be customized to suit all levels of physical fitness and acts as a complement to the conditioning of any sport as it builds, improves, and challenges foundational movement patterns. The method aims to strengthen every muscle in the body to “develop the body uniformly, correct wrong postures, restore physical vitality, invigorate the mind, and elevate the spirit.”
A Pilates workout is fundamentally about quality over quantity. Its effectiveness as a discipline lies in its insistence on correct alignment during the execution of full-body movements. Although attention to detail is a core tenet of the method, a Pilates workout is far from stagnant. The ultimate goal of the work is to learn to move dynamically while maintaining a high level of precision.
Every Pilates exercise consists of stretch, strength and control––simultaneously. The stretch in the body is created by the strength of oppositional forces, while the mind must control the movement to keep joints aligned and centered.
The Pilates system utilizes multiple apparatus to teach the body to fire the appropriate muscles needed in a movement in the proper order. The exercises are performed in all planes of motion with either body-weight resistance or the addition of spring tension to continuously strengthen and challenge.
The Pilates method was created in the early 20th century by physical culturist Joseph Pilates as a means to rectify his own physical ailments and weaknesses. He spent his life dedicated to studying human anatomy and animal movements to formulate the work with which he used to strengthen his own body before teaching it to a generation of dedicated students. He believed that through his system people could “gain the mastery of their mind over the complete control of their bodies”.
Joseph Pilates detailed his philosophy on health in fitness in two books––Return to Life through Contrology and Your Health––in which he calls for people to regain control over their lives and empower themselves through physical independence.
